About United States

The United States is a federal union of fifty states, including Alaska and several other territories scattered around the Caribbean and Pacific. As a multicultural nation, is home to a wide variety of ethnic groups, traditions, and values. Population is estimated to be 300,000,000 people.

The United States has vast economic, political, and military influence on a global scale, which makes its foreign policy a subject of great interest around the world. Almost all countries have embassies in Washington, D.C., and many host consulates around the country. Likewise, nearly all nations host American diplomatic missions. However, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Bhutan, Sudan, and the Republic of China (Taiwan) do not have formal diplomatic relations with the United States.

Climate

The climate of the United States is temperate in most areas, tropical in Hawaii and southern Florida, polar in Alaska, semiarid in the Great Plains west of the 100th meridian, Mediterranean in coastal California and arid in the Great Basin. Its comparatively generous climate includes infrequent severe drought in the major agricultural regions, a general lack of widespread flooding, and a mainly temperate climate that receives adequate precipitation. The United States has more tornadoes than the rest of the world combined.
